WHAT IS CLUBES DE CIENCIA MÉXICO (CDECMX)?
We are an organization of young scientists, our mission is to expand access to high-quality science education and to inspire and mentor the future generation of scientists and innovators in Mexico through international scientific networks.
WHAT IS CDECMX’S MINIMOOCS PLATFORM?
It is an online platform created by Clubes de Ciencia México to expand access to online educational content. In this platform, we will offer short courses in Spanish open to anybody through the internet. The courses will revolve around topics at the frontier of research, technology, and innovation. Our goal is to create a space for the interaction and collaboration between instructors, students and members of our network.
In addition, this platform can be used as an online library of scientific education content in Spanish. We intend to create a big community that allows us to build mentoring and long-lasting relations and collaborations.
What this video!
WHAT IS A MINIMOOC?
A miniMOOC is a short online course for high school and college students.
The characteristics of a miniMOOC are:
A 5 lesson course that progress upwards in complexity (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).
It is designed by 4 instructors, 2 based in EUA And 2 in Mexico. Each lesson will contain an animation made by professionals in design and video production.
Designed for high school and college students in Spanish (subtitles in English).
Topics at the frontier of science to inspire the future generation of Scientists (see a list of topics below).
At the end of each lesson, students are presented with an evaluation activity.
WHAT CONTENT IS INCLUDED IN A MINIMOOC?
Each miniMOOC should be divided into 5 lessons.
It includes animations, simple hands-on activities (DIY: list of supplies and step by step instructions), computational activities, accompanying material such as links to papers, videos.
All lessons should include an evaluation activity.
The content of the videos in the miniMOOC will be developed in Spanish with English subtitles.
The topics should be connected to our first edition main area (Energy Research) and should be presented in a novel way to inspire the future generation of scientists and innovators.
WHAT TOPICS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SERIES OF MINIMOOCS?
The title of our first edition of miniMOOCs is “Frontiers in Energy Research”. We have compiled relevant topics into 5 categories
Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (e.g. geology, hydrology, geophysics, geographic information systems, oceanography)
Biotechnology and Synthetic Biology (e.g. novel approaches to the production of biofuels and bioenergetics)
Material Sciences (e.g. energy storage, fuel cells, hydrogen storage, carbon capture, solar energy)
Petrochemical Sciences (e.g. transition from exploration, production and conversion of oil, natural gas and methane reserves, sustainable development of petrochemical industry)
Selected Topics (e.g. intro to programming, intro to nanotechnology, intro to molecular biology with emphasis in examples revolving around energy-related topics)
We are looking to expand the areas in future editions.
WHAT DOES IT DO A CDECMX MINIMOOCS’ INSTRUCTOR?
If you are selected as an instructor you will have the opportunity to design and implement your own miniMOOC. You will collaborate with other instructors to develop the content of each of the 5 lessons in your course and will work closely with designers and animators to bring your miniMOOC to life.
SHOULD I DESIGN A COURSE TO PARTICIPATE IN CDECMX’S MINIMOOCS?
All selected instructors for our miniMOOC platform should design and implement a course. However, you can participate giving feedback to the content in our courses or as a moderator in our online discussions.
*If you are interested in any of these two options, send us an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
HOW SHOULD I DESIGN A MINIMOOC?
We suggest that your miniMOOC proposal is on a topic that allows students to learn in a novel way. We encourage you to think about how students can apply their new knowledge in their communities. The proposed activities should be compatible with an online format.
We are looking to engage and encourage students to participate as much as possible. This can be achieved by doing simple experiments with accessible materials and equipment or using computers and solving problems that allow them to get a better idea of the daily life of a researcher.
You should keep in mind that all proposed students’ activities should be possible to carry out in homes or schools in conditions of scarce material and equipment.
During the final content development of a miniMOOC, each instructor team will have the opportunity to obtain feedback and guidance from animation and education professionals.
WHAT IS THE DESIRABLE PROFILE OF AN INSTRUCTOR?
DO I NEED TO SPEAK SPANISH TO PARTICIPATE?
Speaking Spanish is not a requirement to participate as an instructor. However, you should consider the following information.
The official language of our platform is Spanish as there is less educational content in Spanish available. The animations will be with audio in Spanish and English subtitles. The content should be mostly in Spanish but references and links to published material in English can be used. We are looking to build strong collaborative teams between specialists both in Mexico and USA to develop high-quality content for students in Latin America. Instructors who are native Spanish speakers should have strong language skills in English.
HOW DO I BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR?
First of all, you must register in our miniMOOCs platform (not to get confused with this website).
Fill out your application in which you will describe your miniMOOC proposal. One of the questions requires sharing with us a link to a video where you describe your current research in a creative way.
We ask you to keep in mind the limits of time and space in the application form.
Submit before the deadline, and wait for the results!
IMPORTANT DATES FOR MINIMOOCS´ INSTRUCTORS
Early March: Open call for instructors.
March 31st: Deadline to submit your application at 23:59 PST
April: Instructor admissions notifications and instructor teams introductions. The content development will run from April to July
Early July: Final miniMOOC review and deployment in our platform.
End of July: Kick-off event of miniMOOCs in Mexico City. The exact date of this event will be announced soon.
HOW CAN I IMPROVE MY POSSIBILITIES TO BE SELECTED?
We expect the applications to our program to be competitive. The number of miniMOOCs that we will develop is limited to the financial support that CdeCMx receives. You must apply with a super rad idea!
Some suggestions to improve your chances:
Mention previous experience participating as an instructor. Either in our workshops or any other teaching experience.
Think of an innovative science topic that you would like to teach, and think about it creatively. This is your opportunity to design a course you would have wanted to receive while in high school or college!
Think about simple activities that help students to understand advanced scientific concepts in your field.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM SELECTED AS A MINIMOOC INSTRUCTOR?
If you are selected you will participate in the development of a miniMOOC.
Once you accept your invitation you agree to collaborate with your co-instructors in the design and implementation of your miniMOOC and you agree to follow up on with students participation at least 6 months after launching your course.
During the design and implementation, we expect you to be in constant communication with CdeCMx and TonoMX (Animation Production).
CdeCMx is looking for your participation in the online discussions that could arise once your miniMOOC is launched on our platform and Youtube channel.
You will be invited to our kick-off event in Mexico City (travel expenses will be covered by CdeCMx). The exact dates will be announced soon.
WHAT EXPENSES WILL BE COVERED BY CDECMX?
CdeCMx will cover the expenses of production and animation of miniMOOCs. In addition travel expenses and meals of US- and Mexico-based instructors will be covered during the kick-off event in Mexico City.
WHAT BENEFITS DO I GET IF I AM SELECTED AS A MINIMOOC INSTRUCTOR?
If you are selected:
You will be part of our first cohort of online mentors.
You will collaborate with professional designers and animators to bring your miniMOOC to life.
You will participate in our kick-off event in Mexico City (all travel expenses covered).
You will present your miniMOOC to experts and participants interested in these topics.
WHAT ELSE DOES CDECMX DO?
In addition to miniMOOCs, CdeCMx implements summer workshops called Clubes de Ciencia. We also organize student symposiums, mentoring programs, research projects with scientists and students in our network and social activities for participants in our programs.
